Writing and Cooking

I realized why I enjoy cooking.

Not baking. I haven’t baked my own bread since we moved to Maryland, though I need to get back to that.

But cooking. Cooking just works for me.  It helps me appreciate writing more.

When I cook, I have a challenge to myself to get everything (as close as I can, anyway) to be done as close to the same time as possible.  To time the garlic bread with the spaghetti sauce with the pasta with the salad and so on.  Additional challenges in this kind of thing include making a special sauce for my younger son, who has texture issues, and making sure the garlic knots and the garlic bread both come out evenly, so that all my guys get what they want to eat.

The ingredients are all over the place. I do all my preparations and open my spices and lay out any cooking tools and the pots and pans and so on… and then, I work. And I work hard. And I time the stirring of my pasta with the adding of the rosemary to the meat and so forth. For me, this is exhilarating.  Each aspect of the meal to be treated with respect, of course, and to be boiled, stirred, chopped, etc. as required. And then all the timers go off and everything comes out and ta-da! Dinner for four, served in the kitchen.  Everything is hot and tasty and we are all satisfied.

When I write, this is much the same. I love the ingredients that go into a story. I familiarize myself with the main ones before I begin writing. My lectures and seminars to my furniture might amuse people, but they work for me as I prepare my story for the flurry of creation.  And when I write, each plot line of the story has to be timed just so, so that they resolve themselves within a chapter or two of each other. Thus, the tension is equal throughout the book and my readers are kept engaged (I hope!) as they follow the story lines. And in the end, ta-da! Conflicts resolved, everyone has reached a place of stability of one sort or another, and sometimes, I even let them have a happily ever after.

Hey, it happens!

If you’re a writer and you don’t spend some time cooking on a regular basis, I would challenge you to do so.  Pay attention to the textures of your ingredients and their smells and tastes.  Appreciate the sudden power of diced scallions and the way cinnamon captures air pockets in a pot of water.  Inhale the steam after you take the lid off of a pot of steamed basmati rice.  Immerse yourself in the experience of cooking. You might even wish to take notes.  The beauty of a scene is sometimes in the small details that make it real for a reader.

Baking is fun and it is a challenge as well, but it doesn’t, for me, providing the soul-savory experience that cooking a meal does. Maybe it’s the scallions.

Winter Blues

It's the second week of March. Did you hear me, Old Man Winter? That means that we who reside in the northern hemisphere should start to soon be seeing a few signs of Spring. Yet here I sit in the midst of a winter storm warning, watching ice pelt against my office window.

I spent three hours this morning struggling to write. And I mean, struggling. Nothing could describe my energy level or inspirational thought process other than the simple word...blah. I long for the sunshine, to hear the call of blue jays in my backyard, and use those stimulants as fuel for my writing. Rest assured, friends, that we will soon see the change of seasons we are all surely waiting for, but it might not give us everything we hope.

As surely as I sit here and actually believe that once that change comes I will no doubt have a bolt of energy when it comes to working on my WIP, deep inside I know that won't quite be the case. No, when the days get longer and those flowers bloom, I will be outside, enjoying the weather. Thinking about writing. Thinking about the plot. Imagining all sorts of great ideas to put in my book. However, I probably won't actually be doing it and that's not part of the plan.

When I realized that this morning, I had to ask myself why. Why wouldn't I be working like crazy on my project? The first word that popped into my mind was work.

Work.

When did this wonderful hobby that I love so much become work?

Was it over a year ago when I hit the publish button on my first book? Was it when I started keeping track of what promotions and giveaways I was running? Was it when I created a writing schedule for myself? Or, was it when I had to start tracking the dreaded book sale numbers?

I'm not really sure when it happened but at some point this became a job, and that has to stop.

Right now.

I'm not lazy, it isn't that I don't enjoy work. However, writing has always been my escape from the real world, my relief from real life responsibilities. So, if it was once that way, there has to be a way to return to that frame of mind.

I'm going to start by putting a stop to tracking sales. The money aspect of this venture might just be what is sucking the fun right out of it. Sure I will have to print out my statements at the end of the year for tax purposes, but there is no reason to obsess about that every month.

If that doesn't alleviate the strain then the next step will be to eliminate my writing schedule. There isn't anyone to tell me when I must write, which is sort of why I created the schedule in the first place, but looking back, I can see that my best writing days were unplanned. I just let my fingers hit the keyboard when inspiration struck.

As far as promotions and giveaways go, well I love those and have a great time with them. That won't be changing anytime soon.

Yep, "Operation Make Writing Fun Again" has begun.

What stressors do you find when trying to write? What seems to hold you back? Most importantly, how do you find your way around those obstacles?

Friday Freebies

This week's Friday Freebies picks:

A Truth in Lies - Jeanne McDonald
Genre: Contemporary Fiction
Get it for Free on Amazon
Summary:
Micah Cooper, an EMT in New York City, was no stranger to thinking fast and acting faster. His life was a continuous loop of spontaneous decisions. Everything was a matter of life or death in his line of work. He lived for the thrill, and loved the ability to help those in need.

Being the son of a well renowned surgeon, Micah was well educated in the life of a medical professional. He had seen everything, or at least he thought he had. But when the planes crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Micah realized he hadn’t seen it all. In a single moment, he lost his ability to think. Trapped inside the south tower was his wife, Hope.

Hope was Micah’s world, his sunshine, and when the towers collapsed, so did his heart. He watched, along with the world, as the heart of America went down in dust and flames. Through the chaos and devastation, Micah only had one mission, to find Hope.

By his side, through the madness, was his trusted partner and friend, Zachary Pearce. Together, they raced against time and destruction to save Hope. In the midst of tragedy, discouraged that all might be lost, Micah holds on to a ray of hope that his wife will be found.

The Lost Librams: The Foundlings - R. M. Garcia

Summary:
Foundling: A Vampire caused by accidental means

This title is the first Compendium offered in the Foundlings Series. It contains:

Book Two: The Vampir Manual of the Reich

Can you fathom the horror of being chosen and kidnapped by vampires, simply because you fit their "ideal" racial requirements? To make things worst these are vampires were all once part of the Nazi Third Reich. They give you a terrible choice, which is really no choice at all. Join us or we will kill everyone you love in front of you and then kill you. Gripped by an unimaginable fear you agree; the whole while panicking over the reveal of your secret, the one thing that they don't know. They hand you a manual and expect you to learn it. This is the terror that Abbie experiences within the pages of The Foundlings. This is the very
manual she is handed, and expected to memorize.
And to your despair, your secret Jewish heritage has been discovered. In this nightmare, what would you do next?

***********
Book Four: The Codex of Vampiric Bloodlines
What if there existed a hidden tome entrusted to a secret religious Order that branched off from the Catholic Church? And held within it, everything we know about vampires, including all of their Bloodlines and Bloodsources, unstoppable beings born and bred in evil? What if this tome held all of their secrets, and more importantly, their weaknesses?
And even knowing of its existence, can mean a death sentence, for vampires are adamant that not a word of this information is leaked out. Knowing so, would you dare read it still?

The codex was rumored to have been initially written by R.M. Garcia, a priest of the Order of the Second Life in 1871. It was later passed down to Father Hubert Garcia and has now been entrusted to Father Dominick Luna, who could possibly be this generation's greatest vampire hunter. Are you brave enough to read and use this knowledge in the upcoming war against Evil?
**********
Book Five: The Shrouded Sagas
In a veiled world, containing shadowy truths and deadly secrets there are those that speak out and shed light on the darkness. These are their stories.

How did a priest fall in love with a Cherokee medicine woman?
Why did a vampire of the Reich take the ultimate risk to gain his freedom?
How did this generation's greatest vampire hunter first meet vampires, and the evils that befell him?
How were the cruelest and malicious twins chosen to become part of The Reich Bloodline?
How did a blind medium end up leading a motorcycle gang dedicated to the slaughter of all things vampire?
And perhaps the greatest secret of all. How was the oldest and most powerful of Bloodlines wiped out in a single night?

There are many secrets that are kept. Their very existence is one of them. In the Shrouded Sagas, you will discover many tales that have been kept quite for a long time. As you turn the pages, you will slowly lift the veil of their secrecy. But beware, such information often comes at a price, and Vampires don't forgive easily. Ask any Foundling, if you dare.

No Easy Hope - James N. Cook
Genre: Thriller | Horror
Get it Free on Amazon
Summary:
My name is Eric Riordan. Once, I was a wealthy man leading a comfortable, easy life. Then my old friend Gabriel told me how the world would end. Gabriel tried to help me. He taught me everything he learned as a Scout Sniper in the Marine Corps. All the hard lessons from years spent in the sand choked battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. I did everything I could to prepare. I thought I was ready.

I was wrong.

When the Outbreak came, it destroyed everything. The dead rose to consume the living, and all that mankind spent so many millennia working to build was laid to waste in a matter of months. The undead spared no one, leaving only ashes and death in their wake.

For those of us still alive, every single day is a struggle. In spite of the danger, and the darkness, I still believe there is a chance that the human race can rebuild. If I can make my way North and enlist Gabriel's help, maybe we can find enough people to start over again. It won't be easy, though. I have to make my way across the ruins of the old world, and along the way my will to live, my humanity, and my very soul will be tested.

I have food, I have a pickup truck, and I have my trusty rifle. Most importantly, I have hope. Hope is a powerful thing, but I will need much more than that if I am to survive the dead.

This is the beginning. This is my story.

Writing & Publishing Tips

Picking a Title

Finding the right title for my books is something I spend a lot of time contemplating. Often a title doesn’t come to me for a particular book until I sit down to write the book blurb for my publisher.

Need and Truth, books two and three in my Finding Anna series, were like this. The right title wasn’t coming to me no matter how many minutes—hours—I spent thinking about it. I was at a total loss. I was discussing Finding Anna, Book 2 with my editor one day, and she suggested I go ahead and write book summaries for marketing, and see if a title came to me. Sure enough, after I finished, I noticed a theme. Need. Could she be what he needed? Could he be what she needed? Could they find what they needed in each other?

Red Zone, my newest novel, was the exact opposite. I knew even before I started writing what the title would be. The hero, Gage Daniels, is a professional football player. I knew I wanted to utilize a football reference in the title, I just had to find the one that would be the best fit. It’s a romantic suspense novel, and I wanted something that would reflect that. In football, the red zone is the stretch of field between the twenty yard line, and the end zone. They are the last yards that stand between the offense putting points on the board. It’s the part of the field that either makes or breaks a team. They pull together and score, or they fall apart, and lose the precious opportunity.

Every story is different, but for me, it’s important to take the time to find the right title for a book. It should say something about the story whether it be the overall theme, or something more vague. Either way, the title should mean something, and shouldn’t be rushed. It’s better to take the time to find a title that works, than to pick something generic that has no meaning.
