The Sweet Romantic Hero – A Myth in Contemporary Romance?

Admittedly, I’m new to the publishing game. My love stories are sweet, contemporary romances with happy-ever-afters featuring male characters who adore their women. My men are patient, kind, sweet, and devoted.

According to some reviewers, my guys are also a little too perfect.

I had no idea this type of man was such a myth in contemporary romance, but according to some, these qualities in a man are unrealistic. As a new author, it makes it difficult to find a home in the writing world.

As a woman, it makes me sad.

In my latest novel, Mountain Charm, Dylan Thomas is a Nashville reporter who has been sent to the Smoky Mountains to write a story about Appalachian witchcraft. He falls hard for Angelina Clark, an Appalachian witch who had cast a love spell when she was a young girl. Dylan is stubborn and bitter—thanks to his father leaving when he was a toddler. Dylan also has quite a temper, especially where Angelina is concerned. He tends to act before he thinks, and he ends up in jail twice during the course of the book because of his short fuse. To me, Dylan is incredibly flawed, despite the fact he is very much in love with Angelina and treats her well.

Are fictional guys only realistic when they treat their women like crap? Or, do they have to be tattooed “alpha males” with rock-hard abs (not that there’s anything wrong with that) to keep the attention of today’s reader?

Maybe nice guys really do finish last, which is a shame, because women deserve nothing less than to be adored—in fiction and in real life.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

Wednesday's Weird Word

Cynosure

A person who is the center of attention.

Oddly enough this word originates from astronomy, referring to the dog's tail in Greek, kunosoura. This term was used by Greek sailors to describe the handle of the Little Dipper. Like most sailors of the time, they greatly depended on astronomy for navigation. Hence the 'center of attention' meaning!

Don't you wish you could just rewind time

and go back to when things were simple,

people were unchanged,

and we still believed in fairytales?

[caption id="attachment_70527" align="aligncenter" width="311"]Harlie. JustRewind “She fell off the swing from way up high. I saw it all. She landed on her face and says her arms hurt. She needs a doctor.” With a flurry of movement, several more adults surrounded. But my eyes kept going back to the boy’s. They were my safe place.
“What’s your name?” I asked, my breath coming out in gasps while the pain throbbed in my arms and chest.
“Francisco Javier. Yours?”
“Harlie,” I said. His hand smoothed my hair back and told me I’d be all right.
“Listen, here comes the ambulance. See, you’ll be just fine. They’ll take you to the hospital and get you fixed up.” And I replayed his words over and over as they hauled me off to the emergency room and put a cast on both of my arms.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_70525" align="aligncenter" width="522"]??????????????????????????????????????? “Harlie, why are you here?”
Her blonde hair hung in two braids out of her straw hat. She wore a black T-shirt and a pair of painted on jeans with a pair of very worn, light brown cowboy boots. She looked beautiful and more mature. The lines on her face were more defined and less baby-like.
“My job.” She flicked her blue eyes up and I saw the moisture in them.
“Well, your job is done. Go home, there’s no need for you to come back either. I’m home now.” So much anger was built up inside me, and I just so happened to throw it at this poor innocent girl that did not deserve it at all. However, I couldn’t find it in me to stop.
“Hey, she’s more than welcome here. You can’t just come home after four years and boss us around.” Came the voice of my sister, Lupita, from behind me. She was the same age as Harlie, a year younger than me. They were thick as thieves since they started Kindergarten together.
“Fine.” I moved toward Whiskey, grabbed the curry brushes from Harlie’s hands, and stepped between her and my gelding. “There’s no need for her to be touching my horse.”
“You know, you’re an ungrateful jerk! She’s been here almost everyday since you’ve been gone taking care–”
“Lupita, come on, let’s go.” Harlie didn’t let her finish speaking and grabbed her by the arm leading her toward the main house.[/caption] divider graphics

Finally, our very own M. B. Feeney's collection of short stories, Honour, goes free tomorrow (8 February 2014)

Honour - M. B. Feeney
The world is filled with people destined to help and to serve. Doctors, nurses, police, and firefighters—each and every day, these special people work to help others in times of need. Often, this means putting their own lives at risk in order to do their jobs. They give of themselves to benefit society, and they do it without any expectation of thanks.

And then there is the military…

These are the men and women who don’t head home to their families and safe homes to relax at the end of a shift. They are on the front lines, far from home and often fighting someone else’s battles because it is the right thing to do. Military families struggle to cope with the constant worry and the long periods of separation, staying strong to support those who serve in everything they do, and often are left to pick up the pieces when the highest price is paid.

Servicemen and women are heroes in the purest sense of the word. Even when the world’s gone mad and their hearts are breaking, one thing remains unchanged.

Sunday Sneak Peek - Savannah Leigh

Blurb:
Drew and Lily sitting in a tree (or a church garden)
K-I-S-S-I-N-G (and then some)
First comes sex
Then comes marriage
Then, well, we’re just not sure what comes next.

Lily Kramer accepted Drew Hamilton’s marriage proposal but it wasn’t a traditional proposal. He wants her to marry him so his mother, who has dementia, will know that he got married. Lily, an over-thirty wedding planner, doesn’t see any other offers of marriage in her future so she accepts. Now she has to plan a wedding that looks and feels like a real wedding, but isn’t.  Drew doesn’t want a relationship, but he wants it to look like he and Lily are married, including living together, so that everyone believes.

Will they be able to pull it off? Will Drew’s mother succumb to the dementia before the wedding? Will Lily be able to shield her heart and still have the wedding of her dreams?

**This is the follow up novel to With This Ring.**

Excerpt:

When I reach my room, I stop short at one of the most beautiful sights I’ve ever seen.

Lily is curled up on my bed, her hair splayed out on the pillow, and she’s sleeping. She looks so peaceful and content; my dick twitches at the thought of burying myself inside her. My heart rate speeds up and I realize I really like this view. I want to have it view every day. Fuck. There go my plans to keep things simple. I’m falling in love with Lily. I didn’t see that coming, but I kind of like the idea. As I change my clothes, I wonder how this woman got under my skin so quickly.

I know I should let her sleep, but I have to touch her to figure out if what I’m feeling is real, if I want to put my heart on the line again and risk it being crushed. I climb carefully on the bed and she rolls toward me, but doesn’t open her eyes. I brush a few strands of hair away from her face and she smiles. That smile pushes me over the edge. I know I want this woman in my life, and I’m going to do what I can to keep her. It’s a foreign feeling, one I’ve fought for years, but it feels right. I pull her into my arms. She makes a small moaning sound and curls into me. She’s soft where I’m hard and we fit together like we were made for each other. I relax and get lost in the rhythm of her breathing. Soon, I’m dozing, too.

Sunday Sneak Peek - Sherri Hayes

This weeks' Sneak Peek comes from A Christmas Proposal by Sherri Hayes. This is a holiday short that can be downloaded FREE from the publisher's website.

Summary
Matthew Andersen knew he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Cali Stanton. Since she came into his life just five months ago, his world had completely changed for the better. With everything in their lives finally coming together, he was determined to make their first Christmas a memorable one.

Excerpt

Turning into the driveway of the townhouse they shared, Cali quietly made her way into the house. He’d left the hall light on for her just like he usually did.

The house had little touches of Christmas everywhere, but she’d mostly kept her decorating frenzy to the living room. Matthew owned no Christmas decorations, so what was now adorning their home consisted of a mixture of new and some things she’d borrowed from her father’s house. He had enough Christmas decorations to cover his house more than once and that was saying something considering its size.

She tiptoed into the kitchen, noticing that everything was clean and in its place. After getting herself a drink of water, she turned off the light and walked up the stairs.

The bedroom was dark, but she could see his outline as he lay in their bed asleep. He was lying on his side, facing her, with his arm outstretched. If she had been in bed with him right now, his arm would be around her waist, tucking her into his side. It was his favorite way to sleep.

Cali walked across the room trying not to make any noise. As much as she’d love to just slip under the covers with him, she needed a shower.

She slowly stripped off her work clothes and stepped into the shower. The warm spray hit her full force, but she welcomed it. After a long shift, it eased the ache in her muscles.

No matter how quiet she tried to be so as not to wake Matthew, he slept so lightly that she rarely held out much hope. Sure enough, less than two minutes after turning on the shower, she heard the bathroom door open. Seconds later, warm muscular arms circled her waist. “Welcome home,” he murmured against her shoulder.

Author Bio
Sherri spent most of her childhood detesting English class. It was one of her least favorite subjects because she never seemed to fit into the standard mold. She wasn't good at spelling, or following grammar rules, and outlines made her head spin. For that reason, Sherri never imagined becoming an author.
At the age of thirty, all of that changed. After getting frustrated with the direction a television show was taking two of its characters, Sherri decided to try her hand at writing an alternate ending, and give the characters their happily ever after. By the time the story finished, it was one of the top ten read stories on the site, and her readers were encouraging her to write more.
Six years later, Sherri is the author of six full-length novels, and one short story. Writing has become a creative outlet for Sherri that allows her to explore a wide range of emotions, while having fun taking her characters through all the twists and turns she can create. She is most well known for her Finding Anna Series about a young woman rescued from being a sex slave by a wealthy Dominant. The third book in that series, Truth, released July 25, 2013.

Sunday Sneak Peek - Hidden Threat

Three o’clock rolled around, and a knock sounded on Matthew’s door. He’d been staring at his phone for the last ten minutes trying to come up with an excuse to cancel his meeting with Cali Stanton today. The problem was there wasn’t a valid reason.

The knock came again, but louder this time. It could only be one person, and he knew if he didn’t respond this time, Jason would just come in anyway. “Come in,” Matthew said without enthusiasm.

Seconds later Jason was through the door and standing in front of him, hands on his hips.

Matthew stared up at his brother. “What?”

“What?” Jason said, clearly unable to believe what he was both seeing and hearing. “What? Matthew you’re supposed to be upstairs right now for your weekly briefing. You’re still here. Why?”

Matthew’s mind was scrambling for an answer, but he didn’t come up with one fast enough to suit Jason.

“What is going on? You haven’t been yourself for days, and now you’re missing meetings? This isn’t like you.”

He didn’t need Jason to tell him he wasn’t himself---he knew that already. “I’ve just had a lot of things on my mind lately.” Grabbing on to the first thing he could think of besides seeing Cali again, he said, “I talked to Martinez. The tape was tampered with.”

It took Jason only a second to fully grasp that information. “Who?”

Matthew nervously tapped his fingers on his desktop as he glanced back to his computer screen. “I don’t know, but we have to figure it out. Until we do, we can’t trust anyone.”

Jason nodded. “What do you need me to do?”

This was a strategic move, and one that Jason would always defer to his younger brother. “I need to think.” After another minute, Matthew came up with an idea, not one to solve the mystery of the security tape, but one to solve his more immediate problem. He looked up at his brother. “Do you think you could cover the meeting for me today? I’d like to pick up that tape this afternoon and take a look at it myself.”

“Yeah. Sure,” Jason said. “I’ll take care of it.”

As Jason left the room, Matthew took one last look at the computer screen and the flashing message reminding him about the meeting he’d just handed off to Jason. Matthew wouldn’t see her today. He’d stick with his plan. He could do this. Space. That’s what he needed—just a little time and space—then all would be normal again.

Grabbing his jacket, he was out the door.

Writing & Publishing Tips

Five Elements of Writing the Perfect First Kiss

There’s nothing like it – after a hundred pages of will he or won’t he? the hero steps toward the heroine, heart racing, licking his lips in anticipation. There’s nothing like reading the perfect first kiss. If it’s done right, it’s even more satisfying than a more intense and graphic love scene.

“Are you all right?” Sam asked, straightening to look into her eyes.

“You look a little flushed.” Emily smiled, but didn’t answer.

Instead, she rose up on her tiptoes, her hand curling around the back of his neck, fingers tingling where they touched his skin. His eyes widened and dipped to her mouth before rising questioningly to meet her gaze. She nodded slightly, breath catching as he bent slowly to press his lips against hers. Heat surged through her, electricity tracing over her skin at the touch of his lips – his body against hers, as he drew her closer. In that instant, she felt all that they could be – the potential and the promise – their future together, whether days, weeks or years. -A Piece of Cake, T.M. Franklin

Here are some tips for writing a nerve-tingling, toe-curling, perfect first kiss.

What Kind of Kiss?
The first thing is to decide what kind of kiss you’re going for. Is it gentle and sweet? Rough and passionate? Tentative and shy? Write down all the adjectives you can think of to describe the kind of kiss you want to write. Hit up that thesaurus. It’ll be a big help.

Build Up Slowly
To me, building anticipation is half the battle. You want the readers to be turning the page, wondering, When in the world is she going to make her move? Hint at the budding romance. Shy smiles fraught with meaning, longing glances that the reader knows about but the other character doesn’t see, moments where they almost kiss but don’t quite get there – all of these can help build the romantic tension. And they make it that much more satisfying when your characters finally, finally act on their feelings.

It Doesn’t Have to be Perfect
It sounds like a contradiction, but a perfect kiss doesn’t have to be perfect. Sometimes, the little imperfections – clashing teeth, or knocking foreheads – can add a realism to the kiss that makes it even sweeter. First kisses can be awkward, with the heroine worrying about her breath, or the hero wondering if he’s pursing his lips too hard. These moments are rife with opportunity for comic relief to mix with the romance – and the two can combine in satisfying and unique ways.

Avoid Tired Clichés
Lips that taste like honey. Tongues battling for dominance. Angels singing. Earth moving. You know the drill. If you’ve read it more than twice before, maybe it’s time to find another way to say it.

Focus on the Feelings
It’s not always all about the details. Sure, there’s some appeal to her sliding her fingers around his neck, then up to twist in his hair. But be sure to focus on the feelings to really make the kiss hit home. What does his skin feel like? Is her heart pounding? Are her palms sweaty? Is his stomach flip-flopping? Think about the best kiss you ever got, and then think about how it felt. Try to describe that, not whether you turned your head to the left or the right.
